Hermitage of the Virgen de la Cabeza

From this spot, the panoramic view of the town makes it possible to relate the elevated settlement to the streets that later developed in the lower part. Jesús María García, chronicler of Galera, explains that the local uprising was part of the War of the Alpujarras, even though we are far from that region. On 7 February 1570, after the siege, the troops of Don Juan de Austria took the town.
The violence, enslavement and expulsion of its inhabitants left a profound rupture in local history. The subsequent resettlement gave rise to a new settlement beside the church, on the plain. From here, take in the relationship between the hill and the present-day town. The hermitage is part of Galera’s landscape of devotion, but the place also preserves the memory of the vanished town and those who lived there.
